Life Lesson:

A felony by any other name, is a misdemeanor.

While on duty and acting as a Federal Police Officer in Key West , Florida at the NASKW Truman Base LAKE was on scene conducting a field interview, during that time the suspect became agitated prompting Lake to record the suspect in accordance with his training, state and federal law. The suspect in this incident was a high ranking Commanding Officer of the United States Navy. Lake reported the incident to his supervisor at the end of his shift. On September 16th, 2009 Lake arrived for duty and was arrested by the local Monroe County Sheriffs Department by the request of the Navy Command at NAS Key West and charged with a Felony count of “ILLEGAL INTERCEPTION OF COMMUNICATION” Statute 934.03.1a.

Lake was processed and immediately released on his own recognizance. Lake was placed on paid administrative leave, pending an investigation. Lake went through the court process, testifying that a police office in accordance with the law is allowed to record a suspect without their knowledge. The suspect in this case had committed 4 UCMJ charges; those charges are still pending at the United States Attorney General’s Office.

Lake went through the court system in Key West , Monroe County . The Navy presented the argument that while on duty, employed by the Department of Defense, as a Federal Police Officer, Lakes authority was not recognized as a law enforcement officer but instead was a Security Force Officer. This interpretation found Lake to be a Civilian and in the eyes of the State of Florida both parties must be aware an audio recording is in progress for it to be legal. Lake plead guilty to a misdemeanor and was placed on probation.

Lake has continued on with his law enforcement career and served as a Deputy for Grady County Sheriffs Department, as well as currently serving the community of Dibble as a volunteer (reserve) police officer without pay.

While this was not a pleasant experience, Lake embraces this as a life lesson. Be aware of your boundaries and accept responsibility for your actions. Lake never argued that he was innocent because he was ignorant of the law.

Ignorance of the law excuses no man: Not that all men know the law, but because 'tis an excuse every man will plead, and no man can tell how to refute him.(John Selden  English antiquarian & jurist)(1584 - 1654)

November 2011- Ryan Lake announces to friends and family he is running for McClain County Sheriff

The decision to run for McClain County Sheriff was made years ago by Ryan Lake and now is the time to make that decision a reality.  Protecting our community and its citizens is an obligation Ryan Lake has proven that he is capable of, and is ready to continue as the Sheriff for McClain County. Law enforcement today is more complex than ever.  A successful Sheriff must have the right combination of street experience, training and administrative experience to handle the job.

Good law enforcement has only one fundamental goal: keeping the public safe. Ryan Lake wants to strengthen the Sheriff's Department by using todays social media and the internet to reach out to the public.  This source can provide real time responses to our community in a time when people want real results right now.  People are entitled to a sense of personal safety at all times.  They should feel safe at work, home, and play.  We must always honor this obligation,   Ryan Lake wants to meet the publics expectations by using todays social media and the internet to assist the Sheriffs Department in reaching out to the public.
